If you can sew a seam you can make these beautiful clothes. 

Fabrics

Will be making American Girl doll clothes.  It is difficult to find fashion type fabric in scale to the 18" or smaller dolls in the fabric stores.  Thrift stores are an excellent source.  Half-off sales bring the cost down.  The best source is the girls' clothing section.  Found a lot of neat fabrics/clothes there.  The problem with Thrift store clothing is the sickly sweet smell/odor absorbed by the fabric during treatment.  Here is the cure:
Read the labels for proper washing. (i.e. Handwash cycle and cold water) Set machine to the appropriate settings, then add a pre-soak cycle and heavy stain setting.  Add a no-fragrance laundry detergent and baking soda.  This worked particularly well with poly-knits.  All garments that retain an odor after washing need to be aired outside.  Cut along a side seam or the inner-leg seam of pants , place flat on outdoor mesh furniture and let mother nature finish the job.
